Why do we need to learn about Social Justice
Without a clear understanding of what Social justice and injustice are, we cannot take the necessary action towards eradicating injustices.
This is why it is so important to embark on Social justice education because education is what will give us the tools we need to advocate for change.
What is Social Justice?
Social justice is the fair and equitable treatment of all individuals and groups within a society. In a society where Social justice exists, everyone has equal opportunities and the disparities are minimized.
Social justice is also tied to Human rights. A just society ensures that individuals can engage in activities that are essential to a dignified standard of living; such as quality education, health care, employment, basic infrastructures are put in place in communities and etc.
Social justice in South Africa
Social justice in South Africa is a multifaced endeavor, shaped by historical struggles and ongoing challenges.
Historical context
Apartheid has left an indelible mark and scars that continue to shape the nation’s social justice landscape. It entrenched political and economic discrimination against non-whites; which resulted in economic disparities, unequally developed communities, unequal access to quality education, disparities in wages and segregated communities.
2. Current day Challenges
Corruption is one of the biggest challenges to achieving Social justice in South Africa. Corruption is the improper use of public funds for private gain.
The take away
South Africa is one of the most unequal societies in the world, and 30 years into democracy we are yet to see any significant progress made towards social and economic equality.
It is up to us to take the action needed to overcome the social injustices that exist in South Africa. At the social justice lab we believe that this starts with education.
Social justice education is a powerful force that shapes minds, empowers communities and fosters positive change. With education we can raise awareness about inequalities, gain the tools needed to challenge injustices and encourage active citizenship that will push for positive change in our communities.
